Floods are occurring in previously unflooded areas due to the unpredictable nature of the weather.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department predicts that floods would affect more than 10 million people in Malaysia between November and the beginning of next year. The east coast is primarily where the afflicted areas located.
Among them, 1.8 million people in Kelantan, 1.2 million in Terengganu, 1.6 million in Pahang, 4 million in Johor, and 2.5 million in Sarawak are at risk of flooding.
In addition, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, and Kedah on the west coast of the peninsula are also likely to experience flooding by the end of the year, with 1.9 million people in Kuala Lumpur, 7 million in Selangor, and 2.2 million in Kedah.
Every year, the northeastern monsoon season lasts from November through March. There will be 4 to 6 monsoon surges throughout this time, resulting in nonstop heavy downpours.
More than 70,000 people were left without a place to live as a result of the floods that hit Malaysia at the end of last year. The losses totaled more than RM6.1 billion.
