As heavy rain falls for the second day in a row, water levels are rising on several KL highways.
For the second day in a row, authorities have reported fresh flash floods in the Klang Valley as a result of heavy rains. Three more places were flooded over as of 4.17 p.m. today, according to the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma).
They include Jalan Cheras, which leads to the Billion roundabout, where the water is knee-high and the roads are already impassable. The Hishamuddin Roundabout and Jalan Pudu near the Tung Shin Hospital are also flooded up to ankle-level. Both of these last areas are still open to the public.
Heavy rain, with recorded rainfall of more than 100 millimetres per hour, produced flash floods in 29 places in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, including Jalan Yaakob Latif, Jalan Ampang, Jalan Pudu underpass, Jalan Maharajalela, Jalan Cheras, and Jalan Melaka, according to Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
It further stated that flooding in 25 of the 29 places drained in 30 to 45 minutes, while the other four regions, namely the Jalan Pudu underpass, Jalan Tun Razak tunnel, Kampung Pasir, and Kampung Periuk, took one to three hours to dissipate.
Two relief centres (PPS) have also been established in Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Tamil) Saraswati, Jalan Klang Lama, to house 560 flood victims (from 145 families) from Kampung Pasir, and in Dewan Sultan Sulaiman, Kampung Baru, to house 381 flood victims (from 84 families) from Kampung Periuk.
In Selangor, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, the state’s Mentri Besar, reported that a total of 1,122 victims from 263 families were lodged in nine PPS across the state.
Yesterday, three landslides were also reported.
Heavy downpour, equivalent to half a month’s worth of rain in just two hours, was the cause of the flooding in the capital city, Environment and Water Minister Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man told reporters yesterday.
He claimed that two hours after the rains began at around 2.30pm, the ministry’s Taman Desa SMART station and Air Panas station reported rainfall readings of 106.5mm and 155mm, respectively.
