A 69-year-old woman in Hilton Head, South Carolina, was attacked by a large alligator while walking her dog near her home.
When police arrived on the scene following a report, they attempted to recover the unconscious woman drifting in the lagoon. The alligator, however, emerged from the water and grabbed her, preventing the officers from approaching. Unfortunately, when they were eventually able to save her, they learned that she had already died. This is the second comparable incident in the neighborhood in recent months.
The event happened on July 4th near the Spanish Wells golf course in Hilton Head. The woman was out for a walk at 9:30 a.m. when she was attacked by an alligator. When the authorities arrived, they discovered the 3-meter-long alligator guarding the woman and refusing to go.
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources successfully removed and euthanized the 3-meter-long alligator. They also found the woman’s body and will perform an autopsy on her. It was determined that her dog, with whom she had been walking, was uninjured.
According to officials, this is the second alligator attack in Beaufort County in less than a year. An 88-year-old Sun City woman was also attacked and murdered by an alligator near her home in August of last year. People are urged to avoid walking their pets near lagoons or alligator habitats in the area.
