Three price hikes for flour in six months!

03/06/2022

With severe global inflation breaking out, the price of flour has already increased in January and March this year, and another price increase is expected in June and July. This time the increase will be as high as 13% to 14%, which is the highest ever.

Flour prices were increased by 5% in January, 5% to 11% in March and 13% to 14% in June and July. All flour-related food products will also see another wave of price increases.

Military tensions between Russia and Ukraine are only one of the reasons for the increase in flour prices, with India’s embargo on wheat exports also contributing to the increase. This, coupled with the ongoing devaluation of the Malaysian currency, has also led to an increase in the price of all imported goods. Previously it was about RM4 to US$1, but now it is almost RM4.50 to US$1.

Flour currently sold in the country is divided into government subsidised flour and non-subsidised flour, with government subsidised flour remaining at the same price. However, the wholesale price of non-subsidised flour has increased by more than RM3.

The price of Roti Canai, the Malaysian national breakfast, has also gone up and now the price of Roti Canai Kosong is RM2.
