The Kedah government will keep a tight grip on the sale of alcohol in the state. The Kedah minister Dato Seri Haji Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said that alcohol will only be sold in areas where a lot of non-Muslims live and are licenced.
He told the Islamist party’s newspaper, Harakah daily, that the state government is committed to limiting the sale of alcohol and making sure that it doesn’t sell more than people want. This means that alcohol won’t be sold in public places, the same as in villages.

He said that the change was made to keep peace in the multi-racial community without taking away the right of non-Muslims to drink alcohol “I want people to avoid things like getting drunk. In the end, drinking is bad.”

Also, he clarified that the Kedah State Government is not responsible for selling alcoholic beverages on Langkawi Duty-Free Island. Instead, that is the responsibility of the Ministry of Finance.
