Submersible Searching for Titanic Missing, Less than 20 Hours of Oxygen Left

22/06/2023

The disappearance of the submersible “Titan” carrying five people exploring the Titanic debris has sparked worldwide attention. The available oxygen on board the vessel is gradually decreasing as the time since the submersible went lost passes, making the search operation more anxious. According to the US Coast Guard, the remaining oxygen supply for the submersible’s crew may be fewer than 20 hours, and time is running out.

According to the BBC, Rear Admiral Moog of the United States Coast Guard indicated that based on the initial information provided by the operators, it was estimated that the submersible had a 96-hour oxygen supply when it went missing. However, Moog also stated that determining the exact remaining oxygen level aboard the submersible is challenging because the oxygen intake of each individual on board is uncertain.

Moog stated that the search and rescue team is actively looking for the submersible, assuming that the personnel on board have approximately 20 hours of oxygen remaining. He mentioned that due to various factors, it is difficult to determine how long they can hold on, but time is running out.

The “Titan” submarine sank on June 18th, approximately 644 kilometres off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, with the purpose of examining the Titanic ruins at a depth of over 4,000 metres. The dive was supposed to last two hours, but the submersible lost communication with the surface after around an hour and 45 minutes.

The search and rescue crew is working hard to find the five passengers on board the submersible, who include British aviation billionaire Hamish Harding and others.
