Small tornadoes are expected in 8 states in the country!

Several states on the west coast of the peninsula and East Malaysia may experience small tornadoes similar to those seen in Ipoh recently, according to the Oriental Daily, citing the senior director of the Meteorological Department of Malaysia’s Meteorological Instruments and Atmospheric Science Centre.

Small tornadoes are expected in Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan. Small tornadoes are also expected to make landfall in coastal areas of East Malaysia such as Bintulu and Miri in Sarawak, Labuan, and parts of Sabah.

Large cumulonimbus clouds can cause strong convection, forming a funnel cloud at the base of the cumulonimbus cloud, which in turn causes strong wind shear to form tornadoes. Tornadoes in Malaysia are usually clouds that protrude from the base of a cumulonimbus cloud, which resembles a funnel cloud.

The senior director of the Centre for Meteorological Instruments and Atmospheric Sciences at the Malaysian Meteorological Department pointed out that it is challenging for the Meteorological Department to predict tornadoes because tornadoes tend to occur in a small area and occur for a short period. Tornadoes generally last for a very short time, at most 1 hour.

People are being urged to seek shelter in safer places if they are hit by a tornado.
