Private hospitals are warning of an increase of pediatric Covid-19 patients and urging Putrajaya to increase vaccination rates for children.

The Association of Private Hospitals Malaysia announced today that results of the survey of its members show a rise in paediatric Covid-19 patients in their wards in the last two weeks.

The survey results, according to its president, Datuk Dr Kuljit Singh, indicate the need to increase immunisation for children, stressing that there have been multiple occasions where the child patient’s condition has deteriorated into problems.

In certain private hospitals, vaccination programmes for children aged 5 to 11 years have begun. Once a date has been set, the organisation “highly encouraged” parents to get their children vaccinated as soon as possible.

Seven Malaysian children aged 18 and under have died of MIS-C as a result of Covid-19 infections, according to Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Between June 2020 and December 2021, 174 children were diagnosed with MIS-C after contracting the coronavirus. MIS-C is a life-threatening illness that causes inflammation in the organs, especially the heart, lungs, and brain.

Patients in categories 1 to 3 make up the majority of them. The association stated that Intensive Care Unit admissions have been lower than the wave that hit the middle of last year.
