Paying RFID tolls with Touch ‘n Go alternatives is a real possibility.

18/01/2023

Touch ‘n Go substitutes for RFID toll payment are “conceivable.”

Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, Minister of Works, said today that there is a good chance that Malaysian drivers will be able to pay for tolls using radio frequency identification (RFID) methods other than the Touch ‘n Go eWallet.

Allowing other cashless payment methods would provide more convenience to highway users, he said tonight on Astro Awani’s Consider This.

He also dismissed RFID detection complaints, explaining that accurate placement of the RFID sticker is required for it to be detected by the scanner.

Furthermore, the name of the “Multi-Lane Free Flow” (MLFF) system has been changed to “Multi-Lane Fast Flow” in order to avoid confusion among highway users.

Users should also be aware that the government intends to phase out Touch n’ Go and SmartTag lanes as part of the transition to the MLFF system by 2025.

RFID is a component of the MLFF system, which is a nonstop toll collection system designed to reduce congestion at toll plazas.

Following persistent complaints of vehicle back-ups at toll plazas across the country, 12 new RFID lanes will be installed by mid-April.

RFID was first introduced in Malaysia in 2018, but implementation has been rocky, with many complaints about traffic congestion and a lack of seamlessness.
