According to the “Vietnam News,” cited by the “United Morning Post” of Singapore, streptococcus suis infections have risen in Vietnam since the new year. According to the authorities, most of the victims had either consumed pork products like pork blood jelly or worked in the pig slaughter industry.
Streptococcus suis is a bacterium first found in pigs. Human infections with it typically cause severe clinical symptoms and call for prolonged, costly therapy. A patient’s condition can rapidly deteriorate, leading to issues like unconsciousness, multiple organ failure, and infectious shock.
The Vietnamese Ministry of Health has urged hospitals and clinics to increase their monitoring and response efforts.
Although no vaccine is available to prevent illness with Streptococcus suis, authorities are asking people to prepare pork to eliminate the chance of infection adequately.
