As the flooding in Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang worsens, more people were evacuated to temporary relief centres on Tuesday, December 26, in the morning, as opposed to Monday, December 25.
As of 8am, 12,572 individuals from 3,860 households in Kelantan were affected by flooding, up from 9,721 individuals from 2,962 families on Monday night.
Machang and Kota Bharu are the most recent districts to experience flooding, after Pasir Mas, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Gua Musang, and Kuala Krai, according to the Kelantan State Disaster Management Secretariat. All of the victims are being housed in 82 relief camps spread across the seven districts.
In Machang, six relief centres were established to accommodate 462 victims from 167 households, while in Kota Bharu, one facility was established to accommodate 25 victims from seven families.
The number of victims in relief centres varies: 24 in Pasir Mas are housing 7,210 victims from 2,34 families; 19 in Tanah Merah are housing 1,783 victims from 546 families; 2 in Jeli are housing 255 victims from 75 families; 5 in Gua Musang are housing 271 victims from 61 families; and 25 in Kuala Krai are housing 2,566 victims from 670 families.
The number of evacuees sent to temporary relief camps in seven districts increased from 5,170 individuals from 1,382 families on Monday night to 8,808 people from 2,402 households as of 8am, further exacerbating the third wave of floods in Terengganu.
The Hulu Terengganu district was the worst affected, with 3,005 individuals from 874 households being housed in 34 relief centres, followed by Dungun (1,725 victims from 444 families in 30 centres), according to the Terengganu State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat.
There are ten relief facilities housing 964 victims from 290 families in Kemaman, 24 centres housing 1,609 victims from 364 families in Besut, 30 centres housing 1,432 victims from 410 families in Setiu, and two centres housing 48 victims from 12 families in Marang.
The third wave of flooding in the state has already reached Kuala Nerus, with 25 victims from eight families being moved to three rescue shelters last night.
Compared to 600 victims from 141 families in 13 centres yesterday night, the number of flood victims in Pahang has climbed to 700 persons from 171 families, who have been accommodated in 15 relief facilities this morning.
The Pahang State Disaster Management Secretariat reports that 235 victims from 52 families are being housed in five relief centres in Lipis, while 10 relief centres are now in operation in Raub, with 465 evacuees from 119 families.
The water levels at five stations—Sungai Tembiling in Kampung Bantai Seberang (Jerantut), Sungai Pahang in Kuala Sungai Chini (Pekan), Sungai Luit in Kampung Subuh (Maran), Sungai Keratong at Jalan Kota Bahagia, and Sungai Pukin in Rompin—have exceeded the danger level, according to the publicinfobanjir.water.gov.my website.
