In Jiangxi, China, a man had a bright idea and attempted to put a stack of “hell banknotes” (joss paper) into a bank’s ATM, which caused the machine to malfunction and led to his arrest.

On July 4th, a bank in Shangrao, Jiangxi, reported that one of its ATMs was out of service due to someone depositing “hell banknotes” into the cash deposit slot.

The police initiated an investigation after receiving the report and reviewing security footage, which indicated that at about 5 a.m. on the same day, a guy slipped a stack of “hell banknotes” into the ATM’s deposit slot, causing the machine to malfunction.

The man then attempted to check his account balance by inserting a conventional bank card into the ATM.

The culprit was identified as a man called Zheng by the police. Further research found that Zheng was experiencing financial troubles, which prompted him to consider depositing “hell banknotes” into the ATM in order to enhance his bank account balance.

The Guangfeng District Public Security Bureau has currently placed the man in administrative detention.

Netizens reacted humorously to the incident, with some jokingly saying,

“Depositing ‘people’s hell banknotes’ to receive Chinese yuan,”

“In a hurry to deposit money into the ‘underground money institution’,”

“His thought process is truly impressive,” “The annual sand sculpture has appeared,”

“I guess the ATM was driven crazy,”

“He’s really a talented person,” and

“At least he doesn’t need to worry about spending money; he can enjoy free meals in jail for a few days.”
