Penang People’s Party deputy secretary Goh Kwan Lun called on people in the state to use the receipts from the purchase of water barrels to claim compensation from the Penang Water Supply Corporation or request rebates on water bills.
She pointed out that after four days of historic water restrictions in Penang, she hoped that the previous and current chief ministers would reflect on what needs to be reformed or improved, especially in the water supply management system. It is not the pursuit of greedy development and construction.
She issued a statement today stating that those in power must not completely ignore the consequences, causing the most basic living conditions of the people in the state to be affected, including adequate and clean water supply.
She said that as for the response measures of the state government, the majority of people do not think highly of them, and they can even be described as “ignorant” because the water cutoff date was chosen to fall on the opening day of the school.
“Secondly, there is a lack of ability to communicate with people at all stages, especially the elderly or disabled people living alone, which has caused great inconvenience to their lives due to the four-day water rationing.”
She said that water is nature’s most precious resource and she hoped that no one would use the issue of water supply as a bargaining chip in political struggles.
