A large number of senses appear temporarily overloaded

According to the “Sun” report, Nancy from London had no sense of smell since she was a child, but after being diagnosed during Christmas, she suddenly found that her nose smelled!

“While isolating at home over Christmas, I suddenly found myself smelling everything, and it was a lot of fun to be overwhelmed with so many senses for a while.”

She said that since smelling the scent, she found that she liked the scent of fruit, fairy grass, and scented candles, and now she has all kinds of scented candles in her home.

She also fell in love with some foods again because she regained her sense of smell. For example, she used to hate mandarin fish, but now she likes it very much. She also wants to try the foods that she didn’t like before to see if the feeling will be different.

Virus attacks nerves in the nose

According to Jane Parker, an expert in taste and smell at the University of Reading, the new coronavirus damages the nerves in the human nose and prevents the correct signal to the brain. Usually, the symptoms disappear after the diagnosed person recovers, but some patients persist for several months or even permanent damage. Cases like Nancy’s are very rare, and there are no similar cases even in the UK.

Why is the sense of smell affected after the diagnosis?

It is reported that according to the research of the British Otolaryngology Association, loss of taste and smell is one of the early symptoms of patients with new coronary pneumonia. Complete or partial loss of smell is medically called “anosmia”. Patients may lose their sense of smell and taste as the new coronavirus attacks key cells in the nose.

Certain cells in the nose contain uniquely shaped proteins that the coronavirus is targeting, potentially leading directly or indirectly to changes in the sense of smell. According to the association, Post-viral anosmia is one of the main reasons for the loss of smell in adults, accounting for 40%. Common cold viruses can also cause post-infection damage, and the new coronavirus can cause loss of smell.
