Lung cancer claimed Andre Braugher’s life on Thursday, according to a spokesperson.
The reason of death was revealed by his publicist Jennifer Allen on Thursday, although the Emmy-winning actor who appeared in Homicide: Life On The Street and Brooklyn Nine-Nine simply stated that he had experienced a brief illness when he passed away on Monday at the age of 61.
For the most part, Braugher kept his personal life quiet, and many of his co-stars were shocked to learn of his passing. In 2014, he informed the New York Times that he had given up drinking and smoking years earlier.
Acting with Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman in the 1989 picture Glory, the Chicago native Braugher made his big screen debut.
He then starred in the seven seasons of the NBC police drama Homicide: Life on the Street as Det. Frank Pemberton. For his efforts on the programme, he would earn the first of his two career Emmys.
Eleven times Braugher received Emmy nominations, four of them for his comedic role as Captain Ray Holt on the eight-season Fox and NBC comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine, starring Andy Samberg.
