Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Cyberjaya will achieve 10% coverage of 5G networks by the end of this year.
According to the news sent by Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Cyberjaya will be the pioneer areas of 5G in Malaysia, and these areas will reach 10% coverage of 5G network by the end of 2021.
By the end of 2022, major cities in Selangor, Johor, Penang, Sabah and Sarawak will achieve 40% coverage of 5G, and then the coverage of 5G will be expanded to other regions. The government aims to achieve 100% national 5G coverage by 2024.
Malaysia’s 5G network will be built, owned and operated by a single company. The Ministry of Finance of Malaysia has set up a special project company, namely Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), to be responsible for the deployment and construction of domestic 5G networks.
Previously, when 3G and 4G networks were set up, the government would issue spectrum to individual telecom operators. Individual telecom operators needed to set up their own 3G and 4G networks, and telecom operators could choose which equipment supplier to cooperate with.
However, when the 5G network was set up, the government chose to build the 5G network in a single company mode. This is a very bold and risky move!
