At a luxury retirement village, an elderly couple’s retirement dream becomes a nightmare.
A couple in their 70s from Japan’s Kanto area decided to spend their retirement years at a luxury retirement village converted from a resort, using their hard-earned million-dollar savings. However, within a year, their dream had turned into a nightmare, forcing them to leave the retirement village and seek legal assistance to recoup their money.
According to Japanese media sources, the man, who used to own a construction company, gave over the company to his successors roughly eight years ago and began his happy retirement life.
Aside from that, the elderly couple chose to settle in a magnificent retirement community approximately a two-hour drive away from the city, expecting to live their later years in a safe and comfortable setting, in consideration of their offspring who now have their own families.
They chose a retirement village that had been transformed from a resort, oozing a holiday hotel ambiance, with natural hot spring baths, gourmet restaurants, and high-quality nursing services, all while affording scenic sea views. They opted to move in after paying a 15 million Japanese yen (about 485,000 Malaysian Ringgit) initial deposit each, as well as monthly meal expenses of 110,000 Japanese yen (approximately 3,557 Malaysian Ringgit). As a result, they put 30 million Japanese yen (about 970,000 Malaysian Ringgit) of their life savings into this venture.
The elderly couple had great aspirations for their life at the retirement village at first, believing they had made the correct decision. However, due to a change in administration, the retirement community, which had boasted of luxurious facilities and meals, suffered financial difficulties in less than a year. Many employees left, resulting in a dramatic drop in service quality. Gourmet dinners were substituted with microwaved food, and formerly complimentary services were withdrawn.
The couple began to notice unfavorable developments in the retirement village that were not what they had anticipated. Their retirement life was upended, and the anticipated comfort in their latter years turned out to be a letdown. Despite their efforts to contact management and obtain a refund, they were unable to locate the accountable entity.
Faced with this situation, the elderly couple decided to seek legal counsel in order to fight for their rights and protect their life savings and retirement assets.
