In Quarter 3 2022, Penang will accept bids for an LRT project.
The state government of Penang will release a request for proposal (RFP) for the implementation of its Bayan Lepas Light Rail Transit (LRT) system by the third quarter of this year.
Zairil Khir Johari, chairman of the state infrastructure and traffic committee, said the state would encourage experienced private enterprises to participate in the process.
This component of the LRT project will be implemented by the state government, which will pick the best company for the job. The state has begun the pre-qualification process for the Bayan Lepas LRT programme in order to identify eligible companies interested in carrying out the project. By the second quarter of 2022, the pre-qualification process should be underway, and the RFP should be issued by the third quarter.
Companies interested in participating must submit proposals for the project’s technical features as well as a funding model for its implementation. The federal government would support public transportation initiatives like the LRT.
Despite having frequently appealed for federal funding, the state will not rely entirely on it. The Bayan Lepas LRT proposal has gained permission from the Department of Environment and PLANMalaysia, among other technical agencies.
The LRT alignment in Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project, which includes an LRT depot on Island A of PSR, is now undergoing an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) assessment.
After the EIA approval is acquired, the Land Public Transport Agency will issue its final approval to the Bayan Lepas LRT proposal.
The Bayan Lepas LRT system is a key component of Penang’s Transport Master Plan, which provides a long-term solution to the island’s traffic congestion problems.
The idea received 97.7% support from 22,678 respondents in a public feedback exercise done between August and November 2019.
For the sake of the people’s future, the state government is dedicated to completing the LRT project.
