In Malaysia, one out of two adults is overweight, and one third of children aged five to thirteen are obese.

Obesity and overweight cases are on the rise in Malaysia, according to Deputy Health Minister Datuk Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali.

According to the National Health and Morbidity Survey, which is done every four years, 50.1 percent of Malaysians were overweight in 2019, with 19.7 percent facing obesity.

This means that one out of every two adults is now obese. Obesity affects 30% of children between the ages of five and thirteen.

The government is worried that the situation may deteriorate. He claims that being overweight increases the risk of chronic and non-communicable diseases.

According to the same study conducted in 2015, only 29.4% of Malaysians were overweight, with only 15.1 percent being obese.

He went on to say that this demonstrates the problem is becoming worse.

Noor Azmi said numerous steps had been taken to address the problem, including cooperating with food and beverage firms to stimulate the manufacture of items that satisfied nutritional criteria, as well as imposing excise duty on sugary drinks.
