In five states, January 1st is not a public holiday.

25/12/2022

Jan 1st is not a public holiday in 5 states.

Many people believe that the first of January is a national public holiday in Malaysia. Some states do not observe a public holiday on January 1st. Johor, Kedah, Terengganu, Kelantan, and Perlis are among these states.

Because the 1st of January is not a public holiday in Johor, Kedah, Terengganu, Kelantan, or Perlis, government offices and schools in these states (except Perlis) will be open and classes will be held as usual (Sunday). Because January 1, 2023, falls on a Sunday, and Sunday is Perlis’ weekly holiday, all government offices and schools will be closed on that day.

However, the first of January is a public holiday in 11 Malaysian states and territories: Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, Putrajaya, Malacca, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Penang, Sabah, Sarawak, and Selangor.

Due to the fact that January 1 is a Sunday, these 11 states and territories will have a compensatory holiday on January 2. (Monday). Government offices and schools in these 11 states and territories will remain closed until Tuesday, January 3.

If you miss the January 1 holiday, the next national public holiday is the Chinese New Year holiday on January 22.
