Tax Return Deadlines in 2023

LHDN announces key dates for 2023 tax returns.

According to the Income Tax Act of 1967, whether you are a Malaysian citizen or a foreigner, you must file tax returns if you live in Malaysia for more than 182 days per year and have income.

Many people are perplexed when it comes to filing and paying taxes. Filing taxes and paying taxes are not the same thing. Tax declaration is simply reporting your financial situation to the government for the previous year, whereas tax payment is paying the income tax to the government. Everyone with an income is required to file a tax return, but you are only required to pay taxes if your income exceeds a certain threshold.

Employers must use Form E to submit their employees’ tax returns by March 31 each year, whereas ordinary workers and people without a business must use BE, BT, M, MT, TP, TF, or TJ before April 30 each year.

If you are a business owner, you have until June 30 to file your taxes using Forms B and P.

After filing your tax return, you must keep all relevant tax filing materials or receipts in a safe place so that the Inland Revenue Bureau can produce evidence when necessary for inquiries. All relevant documents should be kept for at least 7 years.
