Attention! If you use your mobile phone while driving and get a saman, you must go to court in person!

From July 10, 2020, the police will take strict enforcement of the law against those who use mobile phones while driving. Violators cannot pay the fine at the traffic police counter, but must go to the court in person and hand it over to the court for judgement. The court will fine violators. If the offender is unable to pay the fine, he/she will have to go to jail instead.

The use of mobile phones while driving is a major cause of road accidents, which is an offence under Section 17A of the Road Transport Act 1959, as read in conjunction with Section 128(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Violating drivers who use their mobile phones while driving will not be entitled a non-compound ticket or NC for short. Those who receive a ticket must appear in person to accept the court’s decision.

First time offenders will be fined not more than RM1,000 or jailed for 3 months, while repeat offenders will be fined not more than RM2,000 or jailed for 6 months, or both.

The public is urged not to use mobile phones while driving, including voice calls, text messaging, navigation, and other activities that will endanger the safety of other road users.
