Fitness Coach’s Struggle with Gynecomastia: A Cautionary Tale of PED Use

27/07/2023

Mohamed Shahirul, a 30-year-old fitness coach and bodybuilder, used performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) or steroids to bulk up swiftly for the Mr. Enrich bodybuilding competition in 2019. However, the medications caused his breast tissue to expand, and he was diagnosed with gynecomastia, a disorder in which men develop breast tissue.

It was too late for him to realize he had this ailment, and he had to have surgery to remove the breast tissue. Unfortunately, his insurance did not cover the cosmetic surgery, and he had to pay 12,000 Malaysian Ringgit out of pocket.

Shahirul began using performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) in 2017 in order to attain an extraordinary physique for bodybuilding competitions. He stated that his goal was to achieve an outstanding body shape, not just acquire muscle quickly. He said that he had no idea that utilizing steroids might be damaging to his body and have such negative consequences.

Although he attempted to halt the spread of the ailment, it was too late, and he had to have surgery to remove the breast tissue in June at a hospital in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Despite the difficulty of sharing his story, Shahirul chose to do so in order to raise awareness about the potential hazards of using steroids without sufficient understanding and measures.

He said that he began using PEDs on the advice of a friend, but he blames no one but himself for the issue. Shahirul stressed that he does not wish to discourage individuals from using steroids entirely, but rather that they make informed decisions and are aware of the hazards.

Shahirul thinks that by sharing his story on TikTok, he will raise awareness about steroid use and its potential adverse effects, such as gynecomastia. He admits that some men may have gynecomastia without realizing it and that while it is not life-threatening, it can have a substantial influence on one’s health and well-being.

Shahirul stated that there is a good technique to use PEDs to minimize adverse effects, but he encourages those who are concerned about the hazards to avoid using steroids entirely. His main goal is to get people to be more knowledgeable and careful about using performance-enhancing substances, so they may make better decisions for their own health and well-being.
