Eye Care Guidelines
There are several things you can do to maintain your eyes healthy and ensure that you see clearly.
1. Give your eyes a rest. When you spend a lot of time in front of a computer, you may forget to blink, causing your eyes to become fatigued. Try the 20-20-20 rule to prevent eye strain: Look away for 20 seconds about 20 feet in front of you every 20 minutes.
2. If you wear contacts, take precautions to avoid getting an infection in your eyes. Before inserting or removing your contact lenses, thoroughly wash your hands. Follow the directions on how to clean them properly and replace them as needed.
3. Put on your sunglasses. Sun exposure can harm your eyes and increase your risk of cataracts and macular degeneration as you age. Use sunglasses that filter out 99 to 100 percent of UV-A and UV-B radiation to protect your eyes.
4. Put on your safety glasses. Eye protection is required when participating in some sports, working in industries such as factory labour and construction, and performing home repairs or projects to avoid eye injury.
5.Consume a healthy, well-balanced diet. Fruits and vegetables, particularly rich yellow and green leafy vegetables, should be abundant in your diet. Salmon, tuna, and halibut, which are abundant in omega-3 fatty acids, can also improve your eyes.
6. Maintain a healthy body mass index (BMI). Obesity or being overweight raises your chances of developing diabetes. If you have diabetes, you’re more likely to develop diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma.
