Tips for Keeping Your Lips Healthy

10/01/2022

I’ll confess it: in the cold season, I let myself relax a little. My hands and face are dry despite my best efforts to moisturise them. I can’t recall when I last had my nails done. I’m not going out in the cold for after-work salon appointments when I can stay in my sweatpants and watch Netflix instead.

1. Exfoliate. Brush your lips gently with a damp, soft toothbrush or washcloth to remove dry, dead skin flakes. This is something I do around once a week, usually on a weekend morning when I’m not planning on going outside soon immediately because it irritates my lips.

2. Hydrate. Lips, unlike the rest of your skin, are prone to drying out and chapping because they lack oil glands. Drink plenty of water to keep your lips hydrated, and avoid licking them (it took me years to stop the habit!) as this also dehydrates them. But I never slack when it comes to my lips. I can’t bear having chapped, dry lips. That’s why, just in time for Valentine’s Day, I’m providing our greatest recommendations for having beautiful, healthy, and kissable lips!

3. Protect and moisturize your lips. The lower lip, in particular, is exposed to a lot of sun. As a result, they’re a popular site for skin cancer. As a result, it’s critical that your daytime lip cream has an SPF of 15 or greater. Even if you’re wearing a mask, you should still protect your lips and the rest of your skin! To fight nocturnal dryness, I switch to a moisturising moisturiser at night.

4. Frequently reapply. Reapply a sun-protective lip product every two hours, especially if you’ve eaten or drunk something. I store my SPF lip balm in several locations since I find it useful. I have one at my work, in my bag, on my bedside, and in my bathroom, so I don’t forget to use it after brushing my teeth. The advantage of this approach is that you now have an excuse to try out new brands and goods. Reapply sun-protective lip balms every two hours at the absolute least.

5. Make sure you’re using the proper products when it comes to products. Look for products that have received the Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Approval. Our Photobiology Committee (a group of leading experts in how the sun interacts with skin) only awards the Seal to sun-protective products that fulfil their standards, so you can be confident that if a product has our Seal, your lips will be soft and sun-safe.
