Elon Musk: Artificial intelligence is a dangerous technology, the government should step in to regulate

03/03/2023

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and Twitter and a frequent critic of government securities regulation and highway safety agencies, recently called for a crackdown on advances in artificial intelligence (AI).

According to Central News Agency and Reuters, Musk said, “Artificial intelligence makes me feel super stressed,” towards the end of his three-hour speech at Tesla’s Investor Day to explain the company’s long-term vision, “Master Plan 3.”

A video was played during the meeting that appeared to show Tesla’s humanoid robot Optimus putting together other robots’ parts in preparation for building a copy of itself.

Several of Tesla’s highest-ranking executives also discussed the company’s efforts to develop self-driving vehicles using AI technology and how they are being regulated at the federal and state levels.

When an analyst asked Musk if he thought AI could help Tesla speed up the production of automobiles, Musk did not sound as optimistic.

According to Musk, “I don’t think AI is going to assist us in building cars soon, and at that point…every one of us will be out of a job.”

Musk has expressed some worry about developments in artificial intelligence. Sixteen other high-ranking Tesla employees, including the Autopilot division head, also took the stage.

Musk stated, “Something must be put in place to monitor the progress of AI to ensure that it serves the public good. This is some seriously risky tech. I worry that I may have contributed to its rapid growth.”

Musk has stated that Tesla will continue to work towards the goal of fully autonomous driving because it is “obviously useful” for AI.

“After a brief pause, Musk said, “and that stresses me out,” before adding, “Tesla is currently making a positive contribution in the field of artificial intelligence. I’m at a loss for words.”
