Due to imports, there is a 1M egg shortage in Malaysia in Dec 2022.
According to Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu, the country’s egg supply shortfall was reduced to one million in December last year after the government allowed eggs to be imported as a temporary measure.
In comparison to the critical shortage of 157 million eggs in November and 118 million eggs in October last year, this was a commendable achievement.
The government allowed eggs to be brought in by air from India in December of last year as part of a trial period to ensure the imports met all of the set standards.
The government was unable to ban egg exports due to a sharp increase in imported chicken feed and prolonged price controls, which put pressure on local egg producers.
To address the issue, MAFS met with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry and the Finance Ministry, as well as proposing that needy groups receive targeted subsidies before the egg price was re-floated.
Meanwhile, grain corn was among the main topic of discussion between Malaysia and Brazil in efforts to strengthen bilateral trade in the agriculture sector.
This issue was raised when Brazil’s ambassador to Malaysia, Ary Norton De Murat Quintella, paid a visit to Mohamad at the ministry here.
