In response to recent rumors circulating online about black poles installed on the side of the road, JPJ has confirmed that they are traffic cameras, though they are still in the testing phase and have not yet been officially put into service.
JPJ is testing the new traffic cameras and may use them to replace several of the current obsolete and damaged Automatic Wake-up Automated Security System (AWAS) cameras.
There are at least 45 AWAS cameras in the country, of which 29 are used to outlaw speeding while the remaining 16 are used to outlaw red light jumping.
Road users are urged to follow traffic rules and not to speed or run red lights.
