Close Call on a Flight: Mistaken for Drug Smuggling Accomplice

28/06/2023

On one flight, a foreign woman had an encounter with a chatty seatmate; the two of them enjoyed engaging in conversation the entire ride. They were unintentionally mistaken for “drug smuggling accomplices” because of their nice conversation!

The woman reportedly posted about her encounter on social media. She admitted that she and the woman seated next to her on the aircraft to Dubai had a lively talk.

“She was well-spoken, so we chatted all the way on the flight to Dubai.”

However, the woman abruptly started sobbing, sweating, and experiencing abdominal pain as the aircraft was getting ready to arrive at Dubai International Airport. As soon as the call button was used to summon a flight attendant, the woman began addressing the other passenger as “my daughter” and tightly gripping her hand, giving everyone the impression that they were already acquainted.

The only options available to the flight attendants at the time were to give the woman painkillers and help her get into a wheelchair so she could wait for the plane to land. A male passenger saw the woman’s anxiety and quietly told her to keep away from the other lady while helping her grab her luggage from the overhead bin.

Despite her desire to stay with her new buddy, the woman eventually disembarked alone and declined the woman’s offer to assist with her carry-on bags. Even the airline personnel was informed that they had only just met.

The woman claimed that during the baggage check, she heard a commotion and noticed the woman fleeing with her carry-on bag. The airport police eventually detained her. The woman was being detained when the woman heard the mother yell,

“My daughter! How could you treat me in such a manner?”

Only then did the woman realize that the woman was actually a drug smuggler and that drugs were in her suitcase. In addition, the woman tried to blame her for the crime.

Fortunately, the man who had previously cautioned her had stated in testimony that they had not met before boarding the aircraft.

She was nonetheless escorted into a tiny room for protracted questioning and had her belongings carefully checked. The woman was finally exonerated since there were no fingerprints on the lady’s carry-on bags.

Therefore, it is never appropriate to temporarily show charity by carrying someone else’s bags while on board or at the airport. If not, disaster could ensue!
