Chong Wei meets the PM in celebrating Raya.
After a two-year hiatus owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob received a visit from Datuk Lee Chong Wei, the country’s badminton legend, today in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
Ismail Sabri claimed in a Facebook post today that Chong Wei, his wife Datin Wong Mew Choo, and the couple’s sons Kingston and Terrence would visit him every year for the Aidilfitri holiday.
According to Ismail Sabri, Chong Wei has been a close friend of mine since I was Minister of Youth and Sports.
Ismail Sabri also thanked Chong Wei for bringing the country’s name to international prominence.
Ismail Sabri remarked, “Hopefully, Chong Wei will continue to help strengthen the country’s badminton performance.”
Chong Wei announced his retirement in June 2019 after 19 years of giving his all to make Malaysia known around the world.
Meanwhile, Chong Wei praised the meeting as “wonderful” in a Facebook post.
Many people are unaware that Chong Wei and Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob have known each other since 2008, when he was Minister of Youth and Sports. Our family has visited him every year since then during Hari Raya. According to Ismail Sabri, this year is significant because they haven’t seen each other in two years.
He also discussed the development of badminton in Malaysia with the Prime Minister’s wife, Datin Seri Muhaini Zainal Abidin, who is also a patron of the sport, according to Ismail Sabri.
