Last year, 180,000 people were banned from leaving the country due to tax arrears!
According to information from the Land Revenue Department (LHDN), as of December 31, 2022, a total of 183,122 people had defaulted on tax arrears of RM8 billion and were therefore restricted from leaving the country by the government. These tax evaders include foreigners who fail to pay income tax, real estate profits tax or corporate tax.
Under Sections 104 and 75A of the Income Tax Act 1967, and Section 22 of the Industrial Profits Tax Act 1976, the government has the power to prohibit relevant persons from leaving the country. The person concerned must pay the outstanding taxes before the name can be removed from the blacklist.
To know whether you are included in the departure blacklist, you can visit https://sspi.imi.gov.my/sspi/ and enter your ID number to find out whether you are restricted from leaving the country.
Taxpayers are also encouraged to check whether they are in arrears through the MyTax system from time to time.
