New Year’s Day, January 1, is not a public holiday in five states.

Many people think that January 1st is a public holiday across Malaysia. In fact, January 1st is not a public holiday in some states. These states include Johor, Kedah, Terengganu, Kelantan and Perlis.

January 1 is not a public holiday in Johor, Kedah, Terengganu, Kelantan and Perlis, so government departments in these states will remain open as usual on January 1 (Monday).

However, January 1 is a public holiday in 11 states and territories. These 11 states and territories are Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, Putrajaya, Malacca, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Penang, Sabah, Sarawak and Selangor.

Since January 1st falls on a Monday, it is also a 3-day long weekend holiday with the weekly holidays on Saturday and Sunday. If you can’t take advantage of the holiday on January 1st, the next national public holiday is the Lunar New Year holiday on February 10th.
