As the labour laws changes which took effect on September 1, employees can only work 45 hours per week.

The Labour (Amendment) Act 2022 will take effect in Malaysia on September 1 and limit employees’ workweeks to 45 hours.

Employees’ weekly working hours will drop from the current 48 hours to 45 hours under the Labour (Amendment) Act of 2022. The working hours are now 8 hours each day for a 6-day workweek.

However, beginning on September 1, companies will be required to reduce the amount of hours that workers work each week by three. Employers can change the number of hours that workers work each week in a number of ways. Datuk Seri Saravanan, minister of human resources, suggested three ideas.

The first is to change the amount of time employees work each day from eight to seven and a half. The second strategy is to cut the number of hours worked on Saturdays, from eight to five. The original 6-day workweek can be reduced to a 5-day workweek as the third option.

Employers are prohibited from reducing employee pay because they cut back on hours worked under the Labour (Amendment) Act of 2022, and those who do so would face penalties.

Notice! From 1 September 2022, all private sectors in Peninsular Malaysia and Labuan will be subject to the Labor (Amendment) Act 2022.
