In Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, a gas explosion resulted in a fire that left two people dead and over 200 injured, according to police on Friday.

Just before midnight, a petrol refilling business in Nairobi’s Embakasi neighbourhood experienced an explosion that severely destroyed its structure, according to a government spokesman Isaac Mwaura on social networking platform X.

Then, he claimed in a statement to Reuters, the fire spread to a nearby textile and garment warehouse, causing damage to multiple cars as well as residential and business buildings.

As a result, Mwaura stated in the statement, “Two fellow Kenyans have regrettably lost their lives while being attended to at the Nairobi West Hospital.” The event also resulted in 222 injuries.

According to the Kenyan Red Cross, 271 patients had been admitted to Nairobi hospitals by different emergency departments.

One person was seen covered in a blanket on the ground in a photo taken by Reuters at the scene of the fire, and smoke was rising from many surrounding houses that were on fire.

According to Mwaura, a command centre has been established to assist with rescue operations and the incident location has been secured.
