The Sessions Court today sentenced a nanny who caused harm to an 11-month-old boy and was fined RM10,000.
The nanny allegedly slapped the baby and hit her forehead until it caused abrasions and bruises.
Judge Siti Aminah made the sentence after hearing the defendant Noliza Osman (42 years old) plead guilty to the charge.
The judge decided that if the defendant was unable to pay the fine, he would be sentenced to 18 months in prison. He would also be required to abide by the law for three years and perform 120 hours of social service within six months from today.
According to the charge, the defendant, who was responsible for taking care of the baby boy, caused harm to the victim at his house in Putrajaya between 10am and 12 noon on the 2nd of this month. Therefore, he was charged under Section 31(1) of the Children Act 2001 ( Charged under the provisions of a), if found guilty, he may be sentenced to a maximum imprisonment of 20 years or a fine not exceeding RM50,000, or both.
The defendant did not hire a lawyer. She begged the court not to sentence her to jail because she still had two children who were still in school and needed to take care of her family.
