A guy in Labuan braved a blazing house to save a family of seven, including tiny children, but he ultimately perished in the incident early on Wednesday, January 24.

Around 4 a.m., Gillian Donald pulled the family out of the flames, but he later passed out.

Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was attempted on the 41-year-old male, but it was unsuccessful, according to Labuan police chief Supt Mohd Hamizi Halim.

“After the victim was taken to the hospital by ambulance, the medical officer confirmed at 6:10 a.m. that the man had died from what appeared to be suffocation from inhaling too much smoke,” the statement reads.

The fire at Lot 24, Merinding Garden, off of Jalan OKK Daud, was reported to them earlier at 4:17 in the morning, according to Supt. Mohd Hamizi.

He reported that the fire had been extinguished by firefighters.

He added that seven people—six ladies and one male—three of them were children—lived in the residence. The victims ranged in age from four to sixty-seven.

He said that even though the flames were becoming bigger, Gillian dashed into the fire and managed to rescue every person inside.

However, he collapsed due to exhaustion following the event.

Supt Mohd Hamizi stated, “The body has been sent to the forensics unit at the Labuan hospital for an autopsy.” Although the victim’s body did not appear to have any injuries, investigations were still ongoing.

He stated that the fire is thought to have originated from the victim’s car, which was parked outside, before spreading to the house, based on the fire department’s preliminary investigation.

He claimed that although two of the house’s residents had undergone treatment for burns they had acquired in the fire, everyone else was said to be safe and in stable condition.

It was discovered that the two injured were a woman and an adolescent girl who had burns and later passed away upon rescue.
