Many people picture their “dream wedding” in their minds. Every girl fantasizes about marrying the person she adores at her most beautiful moment, and every boy fantasizes about walking down the aisle with the lady he adores. But have you considered having your wedding at McDonald’s? One young newlywed couple, both 26, decided to hold their wedding at a McDonald’s restaurant as a fun and meaningful choice, saying, “We’re lovin’ it!”
According to Singapore’s “The Straits Times,” the pair, Elson Tong and Yong Yong Qing, who are big McDonald’s fans, married on July 19 at a West Coast Park McDonald’s. They met in college in 2015, and after nearly seven years of dating, they married in front of 55 close friends and family members, with the famed Golden Arches as a backdrop.
So, how did the notion of holding a wedding at McDonald’s come about? It all began as a joke. Elson Tong, a Foreign Ministry employee, said that he wanted to marry a Creamy Crispy Chicken burger because it is his favorite cuisine. “Why don’t we have our wedding at McDonald’s then?” said Yong Yong Qing, a senior manager at Changi Airport Group.
They eventually made their dream of a carefree and cheerful yet respectable wedding ceremony a reality. “It also reflects our personalities,” Yong Yong Qing added. We both prefer things to be straightforward and uncomplicated, and we want our guests to feel at ease.” When their friends and relatives found out about their intentions, they were taken aback. Elson Tong’s parents initially thought it was a joke, but they soon accepted and backed the idea.
Before the wedding, Yong Yong Qing allegedly contacted the manager of the McDonald’s store at West Coast Park and obtained permission to reserve the site on a weekday when there were fewer customers. The location and food at McDonald’s cost the couple a total of $700 USD (about RM3185). Their wedding invitations were fashioned to look like McDonald’s gift cards, and they collected meal preferences from their guests. Yong Yong Qing thanked McDonald’s for their support, adding, “We are very grateful to the McDonald’s staff for providing food and helping to clean up the venue.” “On the day, the manager personally ensured that everything ran smoothly.”
Finally, the wedding was a one-of-a-kind and memorable experience for the couple and their guests, highlighting their love and shared sense of humour.
