According to Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, Yong Peng residents would benefit from a new RM1.2 million market when construction is completed in three months.
He said he was briefed on the market’s progress at a meeting with Yong Peng District Council president Nur Faiz Jamil and Yong Peng assemblyman Ling Tian Soon yesterday.
The former market was at least 70% destroyed by fire on March 31, 2022. There were no casualties.
Dr Wee had previously requested that Yong Peng assemblyman Ling distribute RM1,000 in financial relief to each of the traders affected by the fire.
Dr Wee, the Ayer Hitam MP, told reporters yesterday that the new market, located on Jalan Meng Seng here, was almost 60% complete.
“It will take another three months for the construction to be fully completed,” he told reporters.
He stated that the stalls in front of the market would be refurbished at a cost of RM300,000.
During the discussion with Nur Faiz, Dr Wee stated that he also discussed the idea to build a Yong Peng micro stadium, which had been postponed for a long time despite the fact that land had been provided.
“We will do our best to make this project a reality for the people of Yong Peng,” stated Dr. Wee, president of the MCA.
Dr. Wee presented 10 hospital beds and 10 wheelchairs to surau committees in Kampung Paya, Taman BCB, Taman Mewah, Kangkar Baru, and Taman Kota during a separate ceremony.
“Each surau will get two beds and two wheelchairs.
“We opted to donate the things to the committees since we discovered that many patients only use them for short-term purposes, such as hospital stays or accident victims.
“This way, more people can benefit from the equipment,” he added, adding that the surau committees would be responsible for coordinating and lending the equipment to the community.
Dr Wee also advised anyone in need to contact their respective surau for assistance if they wanted to borrow the equipment.
