Do’s for healthy nails

As our nails are a reflection of our entire health, good nail care is essential. Here are some tips from dermatologists on how to maintain your nails healthy.

1. Keep your nails clean and dry at all times.

2. Cut your nails straight across the board. Use a pair of sharp nail scissors or clippers to trim your nails. For maximum strength, slightly round the tips of the nails.

3. Using an emery board, keep your nails shaped and free of snags.

4. Biting your fingernails or removing the cuticle are both bad ideas. This can cause damage to the nail.

5. Do not use your nails as a tool to open cans of soda.

6. Trim your toenails on a regular basis. Keeping them short reduces the danger of damage and trauma.

7. Soak your feet in warm salt water if your toenails are thick and tough to cut. Soak for 5 to 10 minutes with one teaspoon of salt per pint of water.

8. Ingrown toenails should not be dug out, especially if they are diseased and painful. If you have an ingrown toenail, you should seek treatment from a dermatologist.

9. Wear shoes that are well-fitting. You should also switch up your shoes on a daily basis.

10. At the pool and in public showers, wear flip flops. This lowers your chances of getting an infection from a fungus that can enter into your toenails.
