The year before last, the number of cases dropped to 800 last year, and the lake police succeeded in reducing the number of crimes.

Tawau’s crime index fell last year, from more than 1,000 cases in 2022 to less than 800 cases.

Assistant Superintendent Michael Chia, director of the Tawau Police District, said the county’s crime index was only 795 cases last year.

He said the statistics of crimes handed over for investigation last year showed a significant reduction of 3,382 cases compared to the total year.

“This figure, based on research and reports from the Integrated Police Reporting System (IPRS) 2023, proves that the Tawau Police District Headquarters succeeded in reducing the crime index to less than 800 cases last year
below.”

Speaking at the commendation ceremony today, Mr. Chia Min Ming said the performance of the police district’s drug case investigation unit was satisfactory as there was an increase in the number of arrests and confiscation of drugs last year.

“There were 1,384 drug-related cases with 1,421 arrests last year, of which 24 were Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 Section 39B drug trafficking cases with a total of 38 arrests.”

He noted that the amount of methamphetamine seized also increased to 50.6 kilograms from 22.4 kilograms the year before, while marijuana was seized at 19.4 kilograms.

He said the police district’s crime-fighting objectives include drug busts, with the main targets being drug dealers and large-scale drug sweeps.

“The purpose of today’s commendation ceremony is to recognize the performance and achievements of the chiefs of the various units of the Tawau police district and the chiefs of police stations, in maintaining social peace in the county.”

A total of 37 people, including 19 journalists and media persons, were recognized.
