The state government of Johor intends to change the official weekend holiday to Saturday and Sunday.

The state government will review the current weekly leave policy, according to Johor State Minister Datuk Ong Hafiz. Since 2014, the Johor state government has changed the weekly holiday to Friday and Saturday. People have complained that the official weekly holidays are not the same with the private sector as a result of the change.

Many people which working in the private sector can only take their weekly holiday on Sundays, but their children must attend school on Sundays, making it impossible for parents to spend holidays with their children and enjoy family fun.

Foreign investment is also impacted by the existing weekly holidays on Fridays and Saturdays, and foreign-funded enterprises are unable to effectively integrate with local working days.

Not only that, but the weekly holiday on Friday and Saturday impacted the work efficiency of various departments, with many public departments closing for half a day or closing early on Thursday. People who want to conduct business with government agencies will also face scheduling issues.

Currently, four states in the country, namely Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu, list Fridays and Saturdays as weekly holidays, while the remaining states continue to list Saturdays and Sundays as weekly holidays.
