The next everyday food item to be in shortage could be sugar!

Our country has previously experienced a shortage of eggs and chicken, followed by a shortage of plastic packaging cooking oil, and recently a shortage of local white rice. The next everyday food item that may be experiencing shortages may be sugar.

The managing director of Mydin Hypermarket (Mydin) revealed that international sugar prices have begun to rise, so the next daily food product to be in short supply in the country may be sugar. Managing Director Maidin called on the government to prepare in advance to avoid being caught off guard if there is a shortage.

White sugar is a controlled product in Malaysia. The price of fine sugar per kilogram is RM2.95, while the price of jaggery per kilogram is RM2.85. As for international sugar prices, they have risen to RM3.60 to RM3.80 per kilogram.

The government began to approve higher-priced high-quality sugar to be put on shelves in May this year. High-quality white sugar is refined white sugar with higher purity. This white sugar has undergone deeper filtration and has higher quality and purity. The packaging of this premium white sugar will have blue words and logos and the words Gula Putih Premium or Premium Refined Sugar and Super.

As for high-quality white sugar, the price is RM4.20 to RM4.60, which is RM1.35 to RM1.75 higher than ordinary white sugar.
