Damaged decorative plants cost DBKL RM700,000 during the Merdeka Day parade.
For RM700,000 in damages to plants used to decorate Dataran Merdeka for the Independence Day parade on August 31, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) was required to foot the tab.
According to today’s Sinar Harian newspaper, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Mahadi Che Ngah attributed the damages on the enormous number of spectators at the city parade, noting that many of them also left behind empty plastic drink bottles and other trash.
Since dealing with these problems would be a difficulty, DBKL is seeking for solutions. According to Mahadi, DBKL will meet with the Communications and Multimedia Ministry to explore how to enhance upcoming Merdeka celebrations in the city.
After the 66th Merdeka Day parade was postponed for the past two years owing to the Covid-19 outbreak, huge groups of people flocked to Malaysia’s capital city last Wednesday anxious to witness it live.
On Facebook last Thursday, DBKL shared a video and many images that demonstrated how the parade participants had damaged the ornamental plants.
The photographs also demonstrated how much trash was left on the streets following the march.
