After China started implementing a series of settings to restrict teen use, age restrictions, ban teenagers from rewarding live bloggers, and prevent addiction, the international version of TikTok has also started age restrictions.
According to a report by BusinessInsider, a TikTok spokesperson said a small test is being conducted. The test is looking at ways to rate and limit content by age to prevent teenage users from seeing adult content.
According to the report, by using movies and games as standards to rate the content, TikTok will test a way for creators on its app to clarify whether they want their content to be viewed only by adults.
What makes TikTok’s new feature different from movie ratings is that age-range ratings will not be advertised directly to users, the editorial office has learned. Instead, the system will run on the back end of the app and filter out content by age appropriateness before it makes its way to kids’ phones.
TikTok spokesperson said they continue to invest in new ways to recommend content based on age appropriateness or family comfort. Through family matching, TikTok is exploring ways to empower individuals and families to select more content preferences for their own accounts or those of their teens.
