If you download Wechat from a China app store, you may need to switch to the international version of WeChat.
According to WeChat’s message, all users of the China version of WeChat must be linked to a China phone number, while overseas Wechat users who do not have a China phone number will have to switch to the international version. After users switch to the international version of WeChat, data will be transferred to Wechat’s servers within 10 days.
