Back in February, AirAsia announced that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with international aircraft leasing company Avolon to lease at least 100 all-electric vertical takeoff and eVTOL VX4 landing aircraft to provide Airtex services. The three companies will meet in Kuala Lumpur this month with the ultimate goal of delivering the aircraft by 2035.
According to the report, the AirAsia Airbus route will start from Kuala Lumpur city centre to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). With the help of the AirAsia Airbus, the journey will be reduced from at least one hour to 17 minutes.
In addition, the eVTOL VX4 can carry a total of 4 passengers over a distance of 160 km at a speed of 320 km per hour, which is designed to allow passengers to travel faster than usual from city to city and further reduce travel costs. If four people ride together, the ticket price per person will be less than $50 (about RM 210).
In addition to leasing, AirAsia will also work with Avolon through its investment and innovation subsidiary, Avolon-e, to commercialise the zero-emission eVTOL aircraft and develop an industry-leading urban air transportation platform in Southeast Asia. AirAsia’s eVTOL aircraft will provide passengers with advanced air mobility, enabling AirAsia to further transform air travel. Previously, Air Asia’s Tony also stated that innovation has always been in the company’s DNA and that leveraging technology to find more efficient and sustainable growth models is a core focus of Capital A.
