Thailand tourists can scan the DuitNow QR to pay directly when they visit Malaysia.
According to DuitNow, Thai tourists can use their local bank’s app and scan the DuitNow QR of Malaysian merchants to pay for their trip in Malaysia. The system will automatically convert the payment into Malaysian dollars and remit it to the merchant’s account.
Currently, this cross-border payment is only available to selected Thai banks and designated Malaysian payment platforms. Thai people can use CIMB Thai, Siam Commercial Bank, Bangkok Bank, Krungthai Bank and Bank of Ayudhya to scan Boost DuitNow, Public Bank DuitNow and Razer Merchant Services in Malaysia.
This cross-border payment will be gradually extended to other banks and e-payment platforms. It is believed that more and more electronic payment platforms will be able to accept cross-border payments from Thailand in the near future.
DuitNow in Malaysia is also working with countries in Southeast Asia to allow Malaysians to use DuitNow when they travel abroad. Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore will all be accepting DuitNow payments in the future.
