09/11/2023

According to China Press, a student who lost money in a phone scam pretended to be kidnapped in order to defraud his parents of their retirement funds.

In a video that his parents saw, he could be seen sobbing and someone else—possibly the kidnapper—threatening to cut off their 21-year-old son’s fingers if the ransom was not paid.

However, because they were unable to pay the ransom, the parents in Negri Sembilan made the decision to file a police report.Police thought the video might be a fake after seeing it.

The young person was found by them at a hotel close to the university where he was enrolled in classes. In the end, he admitted to the authorities that he had staged his own kidnapping.

He said that he was the victim of a phone scam, and that the scammers forced him to stage the kidnapping in order to obtain the RM6,000 from his parents after they realised he had no way to pay them. According to Supt. Mohd Rosli Ishak, the deputy police chief of Seremban, the case is being looked into for extortion under Section 385 of the Penal Code. He claimed that the student, who was freed after a two-day remand, was also a victim of fraud.
