Singaporean Comedian Faces Backlash for Insensitive MH370 Jokes

08/06/2023

Singaporean comedian Jocelyn Chia was in hot water and received a massive reaction from netizens after making an insensitive joke about Malaysia Airlines Flight 370’s disappearance.

“Comedy Cellar,” a New York comedy club, has posted a TikTok video featuring Jocelyn Chia constantly disrespecting Malaysia and even mocking the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 during her performance in New York City. To “greet” Malaysians and Malaysian audience members, she used insulting words.

She also compared Malaysia’s development unfavorably to Singapore, stating that Singapore had advanced significantly compared to Malaysia, despite the two countries having been separated for over 40 years. After the video went viral on social media, Singapore’s High Commissioner to Malaysia, Vanu Gopala Menon, expressed shock over Chia’s offensive remarks made in New York.

“The Singapore government does not tolerate actions or statements that cause harm or distress to others, and Chia, who is no longer representative of Singaporeans in any capacity, does not reflect our views. I sincerely apologize to all Malaysians for her hurtful comments,” stated Menon.

Furthermore, Our Foreign Minister Dato’ Sri Zambry Abdul Kadir issued a statement in which he stated,

“This is a public humiliation of Malaysia, making a mockery of the aviation disaster with no regard for sensitivity.” It shows a complete lack of empathy towards Malaysians and the families of the victims.”
