Severe Burn Caused by Millipede: A Warning of Their Venomous Nature

16/06/2023

A man from Chiang Mai, Thailand, revealed his story of receiving a severe burn from a millipede, warning others not to disregard their venomous nature.

A millipede in his shoe, according to the man’s Facebook post, caused a significant burn on one of his toes. The toe started to swell and get blisters. Although millipedes are typically thought of as innocuous insects, he emphasized that they have poisonous solid powers, and the fluid they exude has the ability to burn human skin.

The man wanted to warn everyone about the dangers of millipedes during the rainy season, especially parents and grandparents. He explained that one of his toes had suffered severe burns because he had failed to see the millipede in his shoe before leaving the house.

The man had been outside for less than thirty minutes when he felt a sharp pain and a burning feeling in his left toe. As soon as he removed his shoe, he observed swelling and blisters on his toe. After washing his foot, he looked inside the shoe and saw a millipede.

When he arrived to the hospital, the medical staff informed him that the millipede had burned his toe. They cleaned the wound, bandaged his entire toe, and then disinfected it.

According to the medical website “MDedge,” millipedes do not sting or bite humans, in contrast to scorpions. However, the fluid they exude has the potential to burn human flesh. Quinones, dangerous poisons found in the fluid, can result in skin burns, blisters, swelling, and discoloration.

To prevent such occurrences, it is critical to exercise caution and adopt the appropriate safety measures when handling millipedes or other species that may be venomous.
